The IBM Data Science Professional Certificate is the more technical of the two flagship Coursera data credentials, and it's the one to choose if your target is a data-scientist role rather than an analyst one. Spread across ten courses and roughly 200 hours, it is Python-first from the start and builds all the way to training machine-learning models with scikit-learn and shipping a capstone project.

The program's strength is that it teaches the modern data-science toolchain hands-on. You work in Jupyter notebooks throughout, learn pandas for data manipulation, SQL for querying, visualisation libraries for communicating results, and finally machine learning — then tie it together in a capstone that becomes a portfolio piece. It's structured so a complete beginner can start, but it doesn't shy away from code the way lighter programs do.

This suits beginners who specifically want the technical, programming-heavy path, and learners who value building something real by the end. As with Google's program, the best part is the price: the entire curriculum is free to audit, so you can work through all ten courses at no cost and pay only if you want the shareable certificate.
